Literacy Programs at Kay's Creek

The PTA believes in reading.  Our reading challenges and activities continue to grow.  This year we are introducing READventure for grades 1&2, and functional skills and kindergarten.  We have also been challenged by Kaysville Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics (KPDO) as a school, to read 10,000 books!  We will have links here to record your progress.  If you have any questions or suggestions about the reading programs please email us at KaysCreekReads@gmail.com.

Tooth be told, Let the books unfold...IT'S ON!!! This year's  KPDO reading challenge.

August 22-March 31

Kay's Creek has once again been challenged by KPDO to read 10,000 books by March 31. Punch cards, online recording sheets, and a recording sheet sent home will help keep track of the books read.  Once a reader has completed a book they will let the librarian know so they can punch their card.  They can bring in their recording sheet or enter it online at home.  Once the sheet is turned in the online tracker will also have the book recorded.  If your reader would like to email the name of the book read, their name, their teacher's name to KaysCreekReads@gmail.com the books will be recorderd online.

For every 10 books completed readers can turn their punch card into Mrs. Johnson for a small reward.

Davis Book Battles

Reading begins now.
Meetings are held the 1st Friday of the month, beginning in October, from 1:30-2:00 pm.
Grades 3,4,5, & 6

Davis Book Battles is a district wide competition in which students read books from a list of 20 chosen books.  3 & 4 grades read the same books, and 5 & 6 do the same.  They only compete against teams in their same grade.  Readers will be on a team of no more than 5 readers.  Teams will pick a name, be given lanyards to collect pins for books they have read, and keep a study guide.  Teams will battle each other in April to determine the one team from each grade who will go onto represent Kay's Creek at district.

Download your registration form here and bring it to the library!

All year long

We are hoping to increase our library's inventory and celebrate birthdays at the same time!
The school has asked treats not to be sent to school for students’ birthdays, but there is a way to share a treat with the school and help our library grow!
A $10 donation to the Birthday Book Club is a gift to share with the whole school.  Your reader will be able to choose a book from the Birthday Book Box, which is filled with some of the newest and most requested books.  A book plaque will be placed inside the book with the student’s first name, the month, and year it was donated.  A candle sticker put on the spine indicates it is a Birthday Book Club book to the students. The chosen book will be presented during your student’s class library period. The special Birthday Book Song and Dance will be performed. Then a quick photo of your reader and the Birthday Book is snapped. The birthday reader will be given a pin and be the 1st person to check out the book!  Their photo will be placed on the Birthday Book Club Wall.  At the end of the year their picture will be placed inside the book, with the consent of the parent. Kay's Creek readers will enjoy this generous gift for years to come.  Every time someone opens the book, they will know it was shared by your child!
As a reminder  an email will be sent at the beginning of your student’s birthday month, or ½ birthday for those who celebrate in June, July, and August. We look forward to celebrating your child’s birthday with the school and watching our library grow.
Thank you, and please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you, Mrs. Johnson.

Reading Links

* Parents! Keep your kids reading to boost their academic performance. Browsing at the library is fine but if you are interested in finding specific books that will interest and challenge your young reader, use the Find a Book Lexile site.

Choosing a book can be like choosing a pair of shoes. Try out lots of styles and colors! But for the best fit, measure your feet and choose shoes with "a little room to grow". The Lexile site helps you measure your children's reading level and narrow the field by their interests. The book list it provides for your child gives you thousands of titles to choose from. This will filter books for reading level; parents, as always, should check the books for appropriate content.
